Was I successful with harvesting yeast?

Thanks for the help, so many articles on the web it was hard to tell the best way so I followed this one: https://blog.eckraus.com/harvest-yeast-from-commercial-beer There is about 3/4" of a creamy color on the bottom of the jar now. For $hits and giggles, what could I do next to see if I...

Was I successful with harvesting yeast?

Hi all, First time trying to make a viable batch of yeast from some canned beer. How would I know if it was successful? I used 100g of DME and a cup of water, boiled and cooled to pitching temps, then took a sanitized mason jar and put it on the stir plate then added the remains of two Julius...

    Infection question...

Quick update, I was careful not to get any of the top layer into the keg and left more in the fermenter than I normally would. Actually tastes fine. Not award winning but no off flavors and no bad smells. Haven’t brewed again since this batch but I’m planning on a brew day tomorrow or Friday...

    Infection question...

I think I’m done with plastic buckets, last two batches have not tasted great and now the possibility of infections... SS brew buckets or spike SS fermenter in my future!

    Infection question...

Hard to say with carbonation but I went ahead and kegged it to see what happens. It didn’t taste terrible or anything so I’m hoping it was just residue from fermentation

    Infection question...

Just curious what you all think... first pure all grain (mash tun instead of biab) and was in the fermentation fridge at 67 degrees for 4 weeks untouched... thanks! This was a lush ipa clone

10 gallon vs 20 gallon capacity?

I have been doing BIAB primarily in a 10 gallon bayou classic pot, but decided recently to move up to using a dedicated mash tun. Good to know how to do it and have the kettle to support if needed, the 10 gallon was always really close to the top! Now I gotta start getting things ordered...

10 gallon vs 20 gallon capacity?

Thanks for all the thoughts and pictures, I think I am going to go with a spike 15 gallon HLT with HERMS with a tri-clamp style 5500 watt element, and a Spike 15 gallon kettle same tri-clamp element, then probably go with the electric brewery controller. As much as I like the SS one I think this...

10 gallon vs 20 gallon capacity?

I like the 15gallon idea, I guess in the end it will take some handy work to make the HERMS coil anyways. What size elements would you put in 15 gallon pots? Will a 10 gallon HD style mash tun be sufficient for a 1.1 style beer? Would the Electric Brewery controller be sufficient for that size...

10 gallon vs 20 gallon capacity?

More curiosity... what benefit is there to brewing 10g over 5g? Just wondering if any of you that do brew 10gallon batches do so knowing you will have a lot of the same beer or do you brew with others who take half of it off your hands? Different yeast? Temp control? Do you sell or trade a lot...

10 gallon vs 20 gallon capacity?

So after brewing for a few years and getting much more into the hobby lately after a brief hiatus, I am trying to figure out what size kettle, HLT, and mash tun to get for an electric HERMS system... I was hoping you guys could provide arguments for or against 10 gallon and 20 gallon pots. I...

    Have you ever...

The one that stalled somehow came out really good! So happy surprise! In the process of mixing things up I realized a few things: 1) Never give up on a beer that you brewed until it is carbed and tasted 2) Labeling is your friend and not hard to do (make it part of the brew day and get the label...

    Have you ever...

Messed up which beer was in which fermenter? I guess I went a little over board on brewing since it had been awhile since I brewed and I think I switched up fermenters when getting one ready for bottling! I had a substance clone in one, a Melvin clone in one and a blue moon clone in the one I...

    Growler options

I have one of these my wife got me a few years ago. It is an awesome growler for what you are looking for although you will probably need to drink the beer within a few days to enjoy the freshness from the brewery. I am not sure of anything else that would keep it carbonated after you open it...

Help me with a hop schedule!

So I have 8 oz of the following: Centennial Citra Mosaic Looking for a juicy ipa hop plan! Give me some thoughts! Thanks and cheers!

Should I have used a blow off tube?

I usually only use a blow off tube when I pitch with a yeast starter, never seen such vigorous fermentation without one. I will probably start using one on all batches just to make sure this doesn’t happen again and risk the infection. Thanks!

Should I have used a blow off tube?

To keep the wife happy there is 15 gallons of wine that is about to be bottled

Should I have used a blow off tube?

Figured, will know for the next brew. Didn’t have the issue with the ipa and same style yeast pack... live, learn, brew some more!

Should I have used a blow off tube?

Never had this issue with a wheat beer but is this just a vigorous fermentation or something bad happening? It was brewed last Friday and everything was clean and sanitized. I used a liquid yeast pack not a starter. Smelled just fine.

    Cold crashing and dry hopping

Pretty sure of the answer but just wanted to confirm before I execute... Can you dry hop and cold crash at the same time? Or should I dry hop then cold crash? I am about to dry hop an IPA and then throw it in the fridge on Sunday. Any issues? Cheers!
