Currently reading The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss and The Last Colony by John Scalzi.

What are your contrarian/"unpopular" beer opinions?

You can make a sour out of anything. Seriously, I think it's still a largely untapped flavor profile that can truly explode the number of potential types of beers out there. Not all beers should be sours, but they can be.

    Castile Soap?

Can you use castile soap for cleaning your equipment? It's basically a mix of olive oil and sodium hydroxide, but I've never known anyone who said it was, or wasn't, an alternative for other cleaning agents prior to sanitization.

    Frederick, MD Breweries

I guess I'll have to do a write-up of the farm breweries then! :mug:

    Frederick, MD Breweries

I definitely will! I just learned of Cushwa recently, so I'm gonna have to make a trip to Williamsport one of these days. As for Hagerstown, I haven't been to Antietam Brewing in a while, but I heard they were opening an independent location soon (if not already). I love the German influence...

Does anyone have a water distiller they use for their brew water...

When I finally run plumbing into my garage and install a sink, I plan to go RO. For now, it's just a standard water filter from my local homebrew store.

    Will this kill me?

If you're aiming to do a wild fermentation, I recommend Bootleg Biology - https://bootlegbiology.com/ - for both the kits to do it, and how best to do it.

    Beer that makes you salivate?

I'm in the same boat here. Sours definitely make me salivate, and that ZAP! feeling is a good one (for me, at least).

    Frederick, MD Breweries

As a resident of Frederick, Maryland for the last seven years, I've watched the brewing scene in this town grow exponentially, and it's still growing! I can't believe how many breweries have popped up in just the time I've been here, and from what I've read and heard, it's only growing. Here's...

    Fermenting in basement

I second that! I have traditionally stuck my fermenters in the basement w/out issue, and have never had to run a dehumidifier. I would go one step further and say if you have mold, a dehumidifier can help, but it would help to get at the root problem as to why you have mold first. An...

What Sanitisers and Cleaners are used.

Is there any special considerations w/Oxyclean? For example, only Versatile and not regular Oxyclean, right? I've heard regular Oxyclean shouldn't be used.

Northern Brewer's White House Beer Kits

I've venture to guess that a substantial number of you out there have seen this, but Northern Brewer released 1- and 5-gallon kits of White House Honey Ale and Honey Porter. http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/brewing/recipe-kits/white-house-recipe-kits I bought the 1-gallon Honey Ale batch...

    Good start up Brewing Kit?

Definitely agree w/Brewer's Best. I've been using a bunch of their equipment for the last few months, and just recently purchased another fermenter (adding to my collection) to continue with more batches. Of note: I was fortunate enough to have a laser thermometer in my toolbox downstairs, and...

And how are you prepared for the coming Zombie Apocalypse?

If we're lucky, Amazon Studios will pick up Zombieland as a regular series (it was one of their 14 pilot episodes). In the pilot, there were showing "Zombie Kill of the Week" and the rules of Zombieland throughout the episode, so it makes me wonder if there will be more rules coming forth soon...

    3 bbl system

I would imagine there can be the occasional late night search on Craigslist as well. I got a freezer for $40 off there that my brother-in-law and I are converting into taps. I can only imagine what other brewing eqpt you could pawn off that site.

And how are you prepared for the coming Zombie Apocalypse?

Ahh, the zombie apocalypse. This is one topic that, surprisingly, brings out a lot of good ideas (and some bad) with practical applications. Even if one doesn't experience the end of civilization via zombies (b/c SkyNet whiped us out first), the steps needed for preparation in the event of a...

Where did you buy most of your equipment? I can't imagine a local homebrew store selling all of that.

What Sanitisers and Cleaners are used.

Anyone ever used castile soap before? Never used it myself, but it's non-detergent and we have a good deal of it.

    New Brewer Alert!

Couldn't agree more. If there's one thing I've noted looking at the forum, it's that people are VERY helpful and happy to offer friendly advise and direction moving forward. A characteristic that bothers me about forums I've been on in the pats (mostly automotive) is how 'superior' a lot of...
