Winter Seasonal Beer Great Lakes Christmas Ale Clone

Agreed. My spice bomb last year was hit or miss depending on the person. I can taste how this be would appeal to a wider audience. I'll probably just bottle up some before I drop the bomb :).

Winter Seasonal Beer Great Lakes Christmas Ale Clone

Just picked up a six of this for $8.99. Honestly I'm not impressed. Cinnamon and ginger are nice, but it really feels lacking in the spice. I'm planning to add clove and/or allspice and nutmeg in secondary now.

Winter Seasonal Beer Great Lakes Christmas Ale Clone

I just brewed an 11 gallon batch today. 2oz of ginger cubed and 2.5oz of cinnamon sticks (8 sticks). I also added 1/2tsp of nutmeg with 10 min left in the boil. It was very fragrant during the boil. I hope i didn't overdo the cinnamon. Based on what I read i should be okay! I'll post back my...

Winter Seasonal Beer Holiday Spiced Ale

I always transfer to keg after about a month and let it sit in that. It makes it easy to take samples so I can decide when it is "ready".

Toasting Oak Before OR After Soaking in Bourbon?

I'll keep the bourbon that it has been soaking in, toast them, and then add them back to the bourbon for a couple days. Worst case I can always add bourbon straight to the keg to kick up the flavor if I need to... Would it be a bad idea to add the toasted chips back to the bourbon that had...

Toasting Oak Before OR After Soaking in Bourbon?

I've searched and haven't been able to find anything specific on this question (maybe I just missed it). I have some JD oak barrel chips that I'm currently soaking in bourbon. I'm planning to toast them after they soak for about a week. Typically I order my oak chips toasted, and then...

    Right Temperature?

This last comment is slightly misleading. I know this is an old post, but I wanted to comment for future readers. They type of yeast can have a large impact on the fermentation temps. I have a belgian wit fermenting with an OG of 1.06. The ambient temperature is being held between 62 and 64...

I think those referring to the <$100 setups are referring to something like this: http://frugalconicalfermenter.blogspot.com/ The key is to search for "Cone Inductor Tank"

What you need to know about chocolate for brewing

I used them as-is. The nibs that I ordered were dried/milled.

What you need to know about chocolate for brewing

I recently brewed a milk stout (http://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/big-honkin-chocolate-milk-stout-all-grain). I did a 10 gallon batch with 2lbs lactose (. I split the batch into 5 gallons with just milk stout, and the other 5 I added chocolate nibs. I haven't worked with the powder, but here is my...

    Back sweeten with preserved juice?

That makes sense to me. I would think that if you chill the cider, and then add the preserved juice it would work out. The combination should keep any remaining yeast from gobbling up sugar. I may try it with my current batch. Can anyone confirm?

    American IPA Long Haul IPA

I just wanted to follow up on this recipe. This is by far one of my favorite IPAs. The flavor is extraordinary. Very balanced, not too bitter overall. It has a unique taste that really stands out (I'm struggling to explain). The only difference is that I dry hop for 1 week. Thanks for...

    American IPA Long Haul IPA

I brewed this bad boy a week ago, however, I messed up the boil time and only did a 75 minute boil (dropping in the initial hops right away). What kind of impact will this have on the final product? This is the first brew I've done with >60min boil. On a side note, I did take a sample last...

RTV High Temperature Silicone to Seal Heat Element Connections

Heh, no worries (double thanks brewmcq). I do appreciate the link. I'm familiar with the setup you are talking about. The more I think about it .... I'm leaning towards a box now. I just didn't want to use the JB Weld (In case I ever want to remove the box). I'll probably do a box with the high...

Not your normal BIAB control box

Very cool. Looks like something they would have used in medieval times... if they had electricity. Oh wait, they had wizards for that sort of thing. ;)

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure if I've seen the setup you're referring to. Did you forget the link? :)

I may be talking to you when it comes time :).

    My "ugly" control panel :)

You're absolutely right. I've had the arduino board sitting around for about 6 years and this was the first project I decided to use it for. I plan on upgrading the breadboard to PCB when I add PID functionality. Alternately I may just add a pre-built PID and use a switch to toggle between the...

    My "ugly" control panel :)

Awesome! It's really great to see what you guys have done. What I really like about the toolbox method is how easy it will be to upgrade. I kind of wish I had gone with a bigger box to hold future upgrades. I'll probably end up expanding it like a house :). I'm doing a test boil right now...
