    Brew & A: Jessica "Hello" B.

Loved it. If there is any fuss over women brewers, I wouldn't know why. I am more astonished that men are any good at it. I say that because I have no talent for cooking. If I had the effortless talent for cooking that my mother and grandmother had, I'd be a natural at brewing. I brew as...

Collecting mash samples and testing pH later.

That's logical. I'll test right away in the future.

Collecting mash samples and testing pH later.

I wondered if the sample's pH changes after it is taken and is sitting for some time in a freezer, refrigerator, or on a counter. There is some grain in the sample.

Collecting mash samples and testing pH later.

Good to know. I will quit struggling to get Bru'n Water to predict exactly what I measured; especially since delayed testing probably fouled the measurement anyway. Many thanks to all for the guidance!

Collecting mash samples and testing pH later.

Do you do test mashes for every beer you brew or just for the unusual beers? I haven't repeated too many recipes yet but might brew Centennial Blonde frequently if it turns out. Each brew will be my test and I'll tune it as I go. I guess the lesson learned is that the spreadsheets...

Collecting mash samples and testing pH later.

Thanks for the reply. Good to be able to trust the meter tests then. I felt I should have added some acid to follow AJ deLange's baseline recommendation. The Bru'N water spreadsheet changed my mind; predicting 5.4 without acid. Just now I reviewed that spreadsheet and found a couple...

Collecting mash samples and testing pH later.

I'm still learning pH meter use. When I brewed yesterday, I drew mash samples every 20 minutes and put them in a freezer. When I noticed the first two were frozen, I put them in the house on the counter to cool instead. I didn't do the pH testing with a meter until the brewday was done, a...

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

I've only brewed for a two and a half years and am starting to get the hang of it. Tomorrow I'm taking a keg to a family party. It'll be the first time a Christmas beer sort of turned out and the first time taking a keg anywhere. Previous attempts either didn't last until Christmas or weren't...

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

Why are we so weak? Are we hungry for approval? Or just nice guys.... Whatever, we won't finish last. Not in our minds. No sir. We will have home-brew and some friends. Even if we bought them, it's not so bad. lol

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

Greetings to you both! I could throw a stone to LitH. Might just hit neighbor's house, I'll not try it. I have only one friend who'll come and spend hours sipping on my beer and rambling about life. Complaining is wrong. He homebrews, too. Better than I. It's my own fault. I need to go...

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a home brewer? "I'm coming over to hang out and drink your beer." Am I Scrooge? Probably. I'm working on it....

Stability report on a new Hach Pro+ pH meter

Good idea, AJ. My troubles with them so far leads me to want a spare. But since the sensors have limited life, the spare would probably not work when I needed it anyway.

Stability report on a new Hach Pro+ pH meter

I ordered it today. I hope I don't reach a point where I wish I'd started out with an 800 dollar one to save money. heh heh

Stability report on a new Hach Pro+ pH meter

DH, I did try the sensor from the first meter; it made the new meter act like the old one. So I think I have two meters that are possibly good and two bad sensors. AJ, neither manufacturer is clear as to what the max temperatures mean, max ambient temp or max sample temp. Whatever they mean...

Stability report on a new Hach Pro+ pH meter

After thinking about it for a while, I bet I used it on a mash sample without cooling it first. The manual says 122F max but I think that is an ambient temperature limit. Could 146F mash have thermally shocked the glass bulb and shattered it? Maybe. They are sensitive little flowers.

Stability report on a new Hach Pro+ pH meter

So they sent me a new one, I calibrated it, and it seemed fine. On the first brew day with it, it was not reading what I thought the mash should be. I tried recalibrating but it seemed locked up. Took a while before I noticed that the glass bulb on the sensor was broken. Half of the sphere...
