    Dark Black IPA

I used the Carafa III special. I keep going back and forth whether it's too roasty or not. The more I drink it, the happier I am with it.

    Dark Black IPA

This was my first attempt at making a black IPA based on several recipes spread around the internet. My general intent was to make a beer with actual dark malt character, not just a regular IPA that is colored black. The beer came out very roasty, maybe a bit too roasty, but it grows on me...

I'd like to participate. I'm at a point where it'd be nice to get some feedback from other homebrewers.

AG'ers: Do you freeze wort for starters?

I collect some extra final runnings into PET juice or soda bottles and throw em right into the freezer. Unthaw and boil for 15-20 mins when making starters. This has worked real well, one less thing to worry about buying/having on hand!

    Burned Beer

Its a tough call... the burned taste is pretty strong now but I am wondering if it will fade like the smoke in smoked beers does

    Burned Beer

Well, I'm faced with the awful question "to dump or not to dump"... I suffered a catastrophic e-kettle meltdown last week brewing up a Rye Saison (see this thread for details - https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f170/bizzare-e-kettle-malfunction-meltdown-393802/) I tasted the beer for the first...

    Bizzare E-kettle Malfunction/Meltdown

When I emptied the kettle the element was covered in a thick layer of burned material - most of this I scraped off, I assume the coating was part of it. Although, some of it did end up in the wort which has me a little concerned. The finished wort actually seemed mostly fine - slight smoke...

    Bizzare E-kettle Malfunction/Meltdown

Yea the sparge was really problematic (I have a pretty mediocre stainless braid... it does OK with normal grists, but really has issues with things like rye) - took a lot of stirring and messing with it to get it done, which resulted in very cloudy wort. I also realized another thing while...

    Bizzare E-kettle Malfunction/Meltdown

Ah, that would make a lot of sense explaining the copper color - this was not a stainless element.

    Bizzare E-kettle Malfunction/Meltdown

First, some background. I've been using a setup very similar to this - https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/stove-assisted-ekettle-293644/#post3650142 Almost identical actually. 120V 1500W high-density element in a 7.5 gallon aluminum pot. I've successfully used this setup on 2 extract and...

    Favorite Beer to Age

Interesting, can't say that I've had the chance to sample an old & young Roche. I was always under the impression these were better with age. Have you tried brewing one before?

    Favorite Beer to Age

I'm looking to brew up something soon to age until next winter (or longer), thinking either a RIS or a Belgian quad. Whats everyones favorite beer for long aging?
