I think most are afraid of snakes simply because they do not know a lot about snakes. Most fears are unfounded, but there is nothing wrong with a healthy dose of respect and caution though. I keep Cobras, Pythons and Vipers, and have never had any accidents, my wife is not even scared of them ...
