American Amber Ale Red Wagon Oatmeal Amber

Thanks for the tips. I didn't expect to find much help when I was thinking about doing this type of brew, and yet here you are! And your grain bill looks just about what i was thinking to boot. I'm planning on hopping mine with 2 to 1 Mosaic and Simcoe.

When you brew this w/ flaked barley, how much do you add?

    Tripel Trouble

Sorry. Misunderstood. I have about 3.25 to 3.4ish. I had a 1l starter that went in there. One calculator I found said 13 oz

    Tripel Trouble

That's what I get as well. So assuming I had an extra .25 gals at the end, that would make sense. Except that I added 1/2 lb of corn sugar w/ 15 minutes left in the boil, which according to beersmith, should have bumped it up about .007 to .008 pts

    Tripel Trouble

I brewed a belgian tripel yesterday. Its a 3 gal batch w/ 9lb of belgian pilsner malt, .75lb of carapils and .75lb of corn sugar. I was assuming mash eff of 65% and was hoping for a pre-boil gravity reading of 1.047 @ 4.75 gal. I overshot that and got 1.056 @ 4.75, So I cut back on the sugar...

Low Attenuation: Possible Factors and Fixes?

The hydrometer is correct. I've checked it a couple of times because I'm paranoid, and definitely made sure to aerate it very well. Vigorous shaking for about 5 minutes. I did not make a starter(I do plan on using them in the future)and when I opened the tube it started to explode, so its...

Low Attenuation: Possible Factors and Fixes?

So I just finished a hoppy amber extract brew with and OG 1.056 and was hoping for a FG of 1.012 or 1.011 which would be in the high 70% for attenuation. Ended up with 1.015/1.016(my hydrometer's tough to read) which is in the low 70's for attenuation. It was fermented with california ale yeast...

    American IPA Stone Ruination Clone

So here's my partial mash BIAB recipe for this Ruination Clone. I plugged into into beer smith and everything looks good except it keeps predicting a FG 1.017 instead of the 1.012 to I'm looking for. I can't figure out why this is happening. I'm assuming it has to do with amount of fermentables...

    All Grain "Partial Batch" BIAB-ing?

Why not just get a 2nd 5 gal pot(and 2nd bag)and just split the batch and combine back in the fermenter? Not really that much extra work.

    Fermentation temp

This is what I've got going. Temps stay consistent at 64-66 with just the addition of a couple ice cubes every 6-8 hours. My apt is always between 72-74. Best way I've found to control fermentation temps.

    Swamp Cooler

I just brewed my first batch yesterday and its my closet in my apt and the temp strip is reading 72 and the fermentation is just starting to get going. I brewed a 2.5 gal batch and had not heard of swamp coolers until today. So two questions? 1) Since its not a full batch, will the temp rise...

First BIAB - Can someone please review my proceedure for corrections

Im having a hard time keeping the mash temp. It was 160 on my first measurement out of the stove and now I've cooled it too much and am working on bringing it back. This has been going on for about 30. Once I get it stable how long should I rest and what is this going to do to my brew?

First BIAB - Can someone please review my proceedure for corrections

thanks! I plugged it in to beersmith and this is what I got. 6.30 lbs of grain into 11.5 qts of water. Strike temp is 165 to get a mash temp of 156. Rest for 60 in the oven. Then dunk sparge for 10 minutes in 6 qts of water at 170. Seems to make sense to me. Any thoughts on the...

First BIAB - Can someone please review my proceedure for corrections

So I am also doing my first mini-biab and Beersmith is telling me to mash with 17.37 qts in my 20 qt pot. Now as this is my first time it seems like it would be easier to get the pot in and out of the oven with less volume. Is it at as easy as say filling the pot with 11.37 qts and mashing that...

    Hoppy Amber Questions

Thanks. I wasn't sure about what to add to up the OG and found that Amber DME listed on beer smith, so it seemed to make sense to add it.

    Hoppy Amber Questions

I did not ask for different yeast, but I'm going to buy the California ale yeast and save the muntons for something else.

    Hoppy Amber Questions

Here's the edited version I just plugged into BeerSmith. Its a much bigger beer, and I like it. Recipe Type: Extract Yeast: California Ale Yeast(WLP001) Batch Size (Gallons): 5.0 Original Gravity: 1.062 Final Gravity: 1.014 IBU: 48.1 ABV: 6.4 6lbs of Gold LME 2lbs of Amber DME Steeping...

I love me some Simcoe. I've tweaked the recipe to include some of the suggestions and its definitely looking more like the beer I was thinking of. Thanks for all the help

    Hoppy Amber Questions

So I've ordered my brew kit from Midwest Supply and am looking at my first solo brew on 12/08(I've assisted on a couple w/ a buddy of mine). My lady was kind enough to get it for me as an early Christmas gift(She's the best!!) The one that I ordered came with a recipe for an amber that I want to...
