    mashing steeping grains

Thanks for the info! Good to know that I can gain a bit of gravity by using specialty grains.

    mashing steeping grains

From what I understand, you won't extract much sugar, if any, from those specialty grains so your OG will not change much. How did those batches turn out?

I actually added the chocolate just before i posted this to get some input. Thought it may add some interesting flavor? But maybe not, this is my first black ipa. And oh yeah, at least a couple of oz of cascade will be going in the fermenter :)

    mashing steeping grains

I'm planning on brewing an extract IPA with Munich "steeping" grains. I read that you need to mash Munich and it's not all that good for steeping. So my question is, if i put my milled 1.5 lbs Munich grain in 3 qt of water at 150 degrees for 45 mins, will this basically be mashing it? and...

    any problem with delayed fermentation?

yeah, although I kinda like the control of pitching low and letting it warm up a bit. On my first batch i had trouble lowering the temp of it once it started fermenting but that was when the weather was a little warmer too.

    any problem with delayed fermentation?

My last couple of batches have taken a while to start fermenting (over 60 hours). I sprinkle US-05 right on top and my beer is turning out great! I keep my fermenter in a water bath and keep the temp around 58. I know that delayed fermentation can increase the risk of infection but i sanitize...

    Thoughts on first IPA recipe

I'm gonna be using extra pale, but from your advice I'll probably stick with 0.5 lbs of C40

    Thoughts on first IPA recipe

Yeah I'm not sure what exactly comes with the extract kit, I'm just listing what is on the AHS website, but it's helpful to know this. What type of steeping grains and how much are usually appropriate for an IPA?

    Thoughts on first IPA recipe

Yeah I was thinking of adding some Cascade too but I really wanted to experiment a bit and see how it turns out without it, then feature Cascade in my next IPA and compare..

    Thoughts on first IPA recipe

This is my first post, just like to say thanks to everyone here, I have got a ton of useful info here over the past few months... So I started extract brewing and have just bottled my first batch on the weekend - a sierra nevada pale ale clone. everything went relatively well for my first go...
