Pay for BeerSmith, or BrewTarget for free?

I use brew target on my Linux laptop. I had stability issues with BeerSmith. I would've bought it if it wasn't crashing. In my opinion, brew target is ok, but BeerSmith is more widely used. Others I have spoken to are really happy with it.

    Attenuation Conundrum

I can't find any smoking gun... Both recipes are very similar. I'm guessing the ESB may not have been aerated as much, and may have required more time to ferment out.

    Pipe smoking, a lost art.

Just bought my first pipe and some tobacco. I definitely enjoyed the smoke... Need to work on how to pack the pipe properly.

    RI Homebrew demand

I live in Coventry. There is a general store near me that has some of the Brew Horizon's products. The selection is sparse, and not updates very often... I mostly buy DME there for starters if available, but they have extract kits and a few supplies there. I frequent Craft Brews Supplies...

    Multi-step Mash in Cooler Mashtun

Ok, so I found some information on denaturing of enzymes; most of the articles concentrate on what happens during mashout. I agree with all of the posts which suggest a decoction is utilized in order to not denature the enzymes in the liquid wort. With that said, I took a gravity reading...

    Multi-step Mash in Cooler Mashtun

You're probably right... I couldn't find any information on this technique at all. Figured I would try to be innovative. I should have figured that there's a reason it hasn't been done before. I hit my numbers, and It's fermenting, so it will be something.

    Multi-step Mash in Cooler Mashtun

So, I brewed Northern Brewer's Bavarian Hefeweizen all grain kit this week. The instructions suggested a traditional multi-step mash for those wanting to forgo the ease of a single infusion mash. My setup utilizes a 10 gallon Igloo cooler as a mashtun, so obviously it can't be directly heated...

    I love PBR.

I would say that I like PBR... If I can't decide what to drink, and it's on tap, I'll usually choose PBR. Can't beat it for the price!

    Computer For Brewing?

+1 for linux mint... It runs very well on my 2008 dell laptop that I got for free. Brew Target is a free software application for homebrewing. I just started using beersmith 2 with it, but it crashes occasionally, so I don't think it's worth the $27 for linux. Try it, you won't be sorry...

    Recipe Building 101

I bought the book "Designing Great Beers". Gives a good starting point for making your own recipe for many styles. I've blindly made great beers using this book as a starting point. You can also use existing recipes and tweak them... Your LHBS will be a great guide for tweaking any grain bill...

    24 hour yeast starter?

Depending on your OG, you should be fine directly pitching a single wyeast smack pack. I've done it as high as 1.070 with good results. Don't give up on the old yeast. I just revived some two year old yeast that I got for free (wlp099). You can store your starter for another brew.

CTZ Simcoe IIPA hop schedule help

As the title says, I want to create a double IPA using CTZ and Simcoe hops. I have never used this combo, so I am looking for some suggestions for the hop schedule. Here's what I've come up with. All constructive input is appreciated. Batch size 6 gallons, OG 1.082...

    Where to buy temp controller?

I did the DIY method with the STC-1000, couldn't be happier. My only advice would be to not use an old computer cable (or anything similar). I was afraid that the wire gauge was insufficient for a fridge/ freezer. I used a minimum of 14 gauge wire for mine. Good luck...

Anyone use hot water from boiler or indirect water heater?

I also have the same setup, no problems with using my hot water.
