    RIP 1st year centennial

Sorry for your loss Matt. Hopefully it is resilient and sends up another shoot. Looks like you have at least one good leaf still. Don't give up hope!

Does Big First Year Plant = Big Harvest?

Pretty sure you can count on getting a bunch of hops off that plant. Look at those side-arms!! What have you been feeding that thing?! Looks great for a first year plant.

    3rd year plants

Your plants look good! The yellowing at the bottom is normal for when the bines reach the top and start growing sidearms. The plant is paying more attention to sidearm growth and starting cones. The yellow leaves will eventually fall off or you can prune them.

    South Florida Hop Growing

Gotcha, I misunderstood the bug sentence. N-P-K are the fertilizer numbers. Nitrogen-Phosphorous-Potassium. That miracle grow soil is good, it's what I used to start off some rhizomes last year which are now in the ground and doing exceptionally well. I just used fish emulsion starting around 3...

    South Florida Hop Growing

You may want to cancel that Organocide order. Ladybugs are considered highly beneficial. Some organic growers actually buy them by the thousands and let them loose on their crops! (They eat up the aphids that eat your hops). Unless the Organocide is safe for ladybugs? Fertilizers higher in...

    What's eating my Perle leaves?

Sorry I don't have your answer as to preference of insects. However I can definitely agree with your observations. Here in Upstate NY the insects are preferring my Perle plant over every other variety I've planted (mt hood, galena, sterling, centennial, nugget, cascade, santiam). I too have...

My 2nd year cascade leaves seem huge to me! (Boston Lager pint for scale, 1/4" rope.) I transplanted this from my in-laws a month ago. I have practically ignored this plant this year.

Growing hops near well - invasive?

The interval is the range of depth which the well has the slots. For drilled wells, screened means anywhere water is designed to enter the well. So well screen interval of 50-60 means the screen (slots) are along the pipe from 50 feet to 60 feet below grade for a ten foot long 'screen'. Single...

    Giving it a go

For your first year, let them go crazy. You want as much green leaf surface as possible to get the most amount of energy into the ground to help the crown get established. I recommend not cutting any bines. (You can trim off the bottom couple feet of leaves off the bines once they've reached...

    Hours of light?

Pretty sure the goal is full sun, as much as possible. But they'll grow just fine if they get half day's worth of sun, it just won't be optimal.

Rhizomes in pot, what size. Onlyfor a year

+1 on the 5-gal bucket! For the first year it's fine. Just drill a whole lot of 1/4" holes in the bottom for drainage and you'll be all set. Don't be surprised if some roots find their way through the holes though.

    Help with tetnang

I had the main growing tip break on my first year Galena plant like that last year. It took a few weeks, but two side arms eventually grew from the bottom leaf node. Then they skyrocketed to the top of the trellis as if they were main bines straight off the crown. I think while the plant wasn't...

Never planted rhizome they look okay?

Your rhizomes look great. I can even see a white sprout coming from at least one. Don't worry, just get them planted and let them take off!

Hips that are good for brown ales stouts and porters?

I would not wait to get a crown. The field plugs should be plenty good for you. You still have plenty of time for the plant to get established this year. Wouldn't count on harvest this year but next year would be decent. If you happen to get lucky and have a small harvest this year just make...

    Nikobrew Rhizome pre-orders

I did get an email with a USPS tracking number shortly before I received my rhizomes. But I don't know if they shipped from the 'local farm' or from Nikobrew. The envelope is gone otherwise I'd look for you. :/ I just looked at my email receipt that I was sent immediately after I ordered my...

    Nikobrew Rhizome pre-orders

I ordered a zeus and chinook from them in February and I received them in the mail earlier this week. But those 2 varieties were from a "local Idaho farm" so I think they used a different supplier for all of their other varieties. Hope you find out what's up with your order!

    2013 Hop garden photo thread

Here are my one year old plants. They came up and are growing like crazy. SWMBO and I got them into the ground yesterday. I planted the rhizomes in the 5 gallon buckets one year ago. I've got high hopes for this year's harvest!
