How do i exract a hop rhizome from an exsisting plant?

Typically you pull rhizomes in early spring before growth comes up But if you have a runner that is already growing , you can dig it up and pot it

    First Year Hop Growers

Been a bit lax on this topic. As much sun as you can get, hops grow best where the days at e very long , ie 40 deg latitude and north. We have replanted our areas that were not productive, and planted 30 new Cascades with rhizomes from healthy plants on our circle, all have produced...

    Brewery names--what's your story?

I come from South Africa , thus the Zulu handle.... so when trying to find a name I decided to start looking for Zulu names. Scrolling down I came across Zenzele - which translated is Do It Yourself (DIY) - very abt. So I brew from the Zenzele Brewery and have a Zulu Shield and Spears as...

    First Year Hop Growers

If we are talking first year , let it all grow, more green equals more root. Each variety will grow at different times and rates.

    First Year Hop Growers

We have over-seeded the field with Red Clovers for N benefits, but still see low Nitrogen issues each year. When i mow , it is mulched right back into the field. Miracle Grow is HIGH N (12:4:8), which is why I use it and I will investigate other fertilizers this year. Too many real life...

    First year list of planting

You will have no problem.... Because you have so many varieties, you are going to need space, 4- 5ft between plants. If it were me, to make memory easy I would plant them in Alphabetical order - seriously. Plant well spaced , mounded up is best , good organic mix for new plants, 6-8...

    Relocating with hops mid-season

Yes pot it now, but you will need a big pot, like an old Tree pot from a nursery. 2ft size It will relocate easily enough when you move as long as it gets water. When you get to June/ July , just cut back the growth to leave just about a ft of growth to make it easy to move, next year it...

How do i exract a hop rhizome from an exsisting plant?

Yep by now they will be growing, just dig up a chunk of growth, keep it moist while you transport and plant immediately when back home. Cut back most of the green growth, leaving just a few leaves , water well and wait for new shoots.

    First Year Hop Growers

To bring this back to the top... Year 4 starting.... With very cold weather with no breaks right up to Mid March (first time in 20 years) the hops literally sprung out the ground after getting some warmth. We are a month into growth, and have 3-4ft already. Fertiliser , each plant...

    Broke my hops

If it a new rhizome and no other shoots , just leave it be for now, wait till new shoots start to grow, or you might kill the plant. A few leaves growing are better than none.

    Hop Dry picture tutorial

With door closed temp gets up to 120-140deg in full sun, so I think that is why it works so well. Dark and hot with plenty of space, we are only using about 1/8 of it at present for hops, rest is our storage for tools etc

    Hop Dry picture tutorial

It is a steel 20ft container standing in full sun at edge of the hops field. Only power I have is 30ft away 3 phase, so not bothered to fix anything in way of fans yet, and it worked fine last year - 2 -3 days max. As we are a small co-op of brew club members, getting guys out to vacuum...

Coco Coir Twine Only Good For One Season?

Hops will grow up just about anything. We used 1/4" Sisal rope for 3 seasons and have changed to Nylon now as tired of replacing and fixing ropes. I have had some bines grow up the 1/8" steel cables holding up the top wires without issue. The reason why professionals use Coir is that it...

    Second year == whoa

Love these scare posts. While there is some truth , this is not the nightshade that people are making it out to be. If you do research on this topic you will find a single reference and plenty of anecdotal additional. "Malignant hyperthermia-like reaction secondary to ingestion of hops in...

First Year Hop Sprouts, Route them all up one string??

I never did get professional opinion from Hops growers on this, but my horticultural friends all told me to leave all first year growth, let them grow and it will create a bigger root system for next year. We did this and had all plants return very strong year 2 (and then onwards) Just...

    Fertilizer recomendations??

Hops are Nitrogen pigs...... you will always be trying to keep N high. I use Miracle-grow in the watering system, approx every 2 weeks and use a general 12-12-12 or 10-10-10 at beginning of season. Compost is also added during season to help. I keep meaning to find a high N fertilizer...

    Hops watering,second yr.

4 liters per week in one good soak in normal soils. If sandy more, if clay not needed to be as much. We do twice a week around 1 gallon per plant each time. ie I have 2 gallon per hour drippers and we water twice at 30 minutes each time.

    Need some hops

Just to clarify. Our Hops farm is a tiny Homebrew Club project (100 odd vines- 9 varieties in bulk and another 6 test varieties) established to see if alternative crops like hops can be planted and succeed this far south and selling the few rhizomes I have is by no means a commercial...
