    beer turning gray in keg

Brewed a Substance IPA clone about 6 weeks ago. 10 gallons split to two batches. Dry hopped in two stages during the primary in both batches. Batch #2 sat in primary about 2 extra weeks before dry hoppping. cold crash 2 days before kegging in both instances first batch - no issue. first batch...

Double IPA Lawson's Finest Sip of Sunshine Clone

in my limited opinion, i think the American Ale yields a cleaner and clearer product tasting more like SOS on tap. IF you want the citrus and tropical fruit punch you get in a can then use the VT Ale yeast. I've done this recipe both ways and it will knock your socks off either way. I happen...

Double IPA Lawson's Finest Sip of Sunshine Clone

i consistently get fg of 1.010 or 1.012 with Conan, even with 8% ABV beers. buy a new pouch or step up an additional time. you should need a blow off even at 64 to 66 degrees if you are pitching at a high enough rate.

How do you add coconut flavor to brew?

I use organic shredded coconut in a hop bag in my keg. dunked the whole mess in starsan to kill any bugs and threw it right in. Worked wonderfully. 12 to 16 oz for a 5 gallon batch of coconut chocolate oatmeal stout. It floated on top for about a week then sank to the bottom and acted like an...

Hop Options for the Adventurous Brewer

Brew a lot with 7c's. one of my favorites. It works well as a flavoring hop and for whirlpool additions. Gives a varied and vague aroma but i use it as a dry hop as well. very citrusy and fruity with some nice melon overtones. A bit of dankness as well from the Columbus like a mild Simcoe...

Double IPA Lawson's Finest Sip of Sunshine Clone

So after making 3 batches of this as originally noted with dry hopping, I decided to try the mega whirlpool at 180 degrees instead, I was a little skeptical about losing all of the aroma during fermentation but it seems to have held very well right to kegging! The flat taste sample at kegging...

American IPA Dopaliscious - Citra/Mosaic IPA Double dry-hopped with Simcoe and Mosaic

That looks EPIC! Fruity? more of the tangerine and orange or does the pineapple from the Simcoe overwhelm it?

Double IPA Lawson's Finest Sip of Sunshine Clone

less hoppy. more citrusy and less danky. Have them both on tap.

Double IPA Lawson's Finest Sip of Sunshine Clone

One of the only downsides to the Conan yeast is the low flocculation. I guess that is why they can everything :) Mine was cloudy out of the keg for the entire 10 days it lasted. cold crashing had no real effect. The attenuation is amazing though. A lot like Pacman.

Double IPA Lawson's Finest Sip of Sunshine Clone

jjbanks, don't worry about a little water in your system unless is undrinkable. if you can drink it you should be fine assuming you pitch enough yeast and it takes off quickly. I'm on a well and get cold h2o in my beer all the time and never have infections. I finished my first batch of...

Double IPA Lawson's Finest Sip of Sunshine Clone

i did a partial mash with a partial boil and kept the hop schedule the same. I just adjusted when i put the DME in to suit. Put 4.5 lbs of DME for full boil and 2 lbs at 15 minutes remaining. corn sugar at 10 minutes remaining. wound up with a calculated 83 ibu. you can get good hop yield...

    Anyone try 7C's hops yet?

If you like citrus then 7 c's is the hop blend for you. I buy this by the pound and brew IPAs with this exclusively about every other brew. 1.5 oz. @60, 1.5 oz @10, 1 oz @ flameout -20min. steep. 2oz dry hop for 1-2 weeks. great grapefruit flavor. brew @ 5% to 8% abv and the hop flavor and...

HELP!! All Extract Brews taste similar

Northern Brewer kits are fantastic. My first dozen brews were with those kits. After about 3 brews I found the same problem. similar taste. This is where the ART of brewing comes to play. The kits give you a fantastic base, but i feel the extract kits are particularly designed to give you...

    Increasing ABV

A ditto on adding only one pound of dextrose to the mix, unless you like a "dryer" tasting ale. one pound of dextrose or DME will equate to roughly one % of ABV. so you can get at least a rough idea of how much more to add to your boil. a great smartphone app is BrewR . It allows you to plug...

How do I split and save a yeast starter?

I routinely do what Dave and Craig do. IF the yeast is a little older (3 to 4 months) i'll step up twice before dividing. I usually don't cold crash the starter unless i'm stepping up again. I ALWAYS have the wort fermenting within 6 to 10 hours using this technique which tells me i'm...

"Trick" for more accurate hydro reading?

a refractometer can be easier to read initially but is only good for OG readings. you should use a hydrometer for FG and mid fermentation readings.

How long does cold crashing (really) take?

I usually do 3 weeks in primary and cold crash 3 to 5 days. usually 3 days will do most beers even my most recent double IPA. i'm with Kombat, Time and cold. the yeasties will eventually drop out.

Who has experience with Wyeast 1945 Neobritannia?

I had a fast fermentation with mine as well but it took almost 2 weeks and some swirling to get the krausen down. i made the same bitter and it tastes great! happy drinking
