    Man, I love Apfelwein

Ok, I gave up the brewing hobby a few years ago, but I quit with a carboy of apfelwein in daughter's closet. It's been over 3 years now. Obviously the airlock has been out of liquid for most of that time. There's a little funk on the top that looks kinda like yeast. Do you think this would be...

Hops on top of floating hops

Thanks guys. Just got back from my weekend of beer drinking in bend, to find the hop island starting to fall apart. I think it will be good. Cheers

Hops on top of floating hops

I'm dry hopping my IIPA with some whole hops from a friend of mine. They've been in the secondary for 5 days now. The whole hops take up so much volume that the ones floating on the top aren't even saturating in the beer. Should I be concerned or do anything to push down the hops? Thanks

    Giving cider away

Maybe it's because I'm new to brewing, but anytime someone is excited to drink one of my concoctions, I enjoy sharing. For me it's one of the thrills of brewing, to make something that others want to drink. Although half a gallon is quite a bit, and I agree it's a good time to teach them how...

Besides homebrewing, what stuff do you like to produce from scratch?

I'm not a biologist, but I think it's the Y that prefers home brew and the X that prefers toffee :) (genes, nerd humor)

    Bottle Bomb Tester

Add a new quote to the list of watching water boil or the grass grow... "it's like sitting around waiting for a cider bomb to blow"

    What I did for [a] beer(s) today

I'll start off with what I did yesterday for beer, which I'm embarrassed to admit in this forum. Since I'm tight on cash, in between paychecks, and it's hotter than hell, I decided to head to the grocery store with my last moneys. To stretch it out til payday, I decided to spring for an 18...

    What I did for [a] beer(s) today

Every time I see the "What I did for beer today" thread scroll across my feed, I think to myself this is going to be funny. Then I realize it's a serious thread about being a productive brewer, which is also great. I am still left somewhat unsatisfied wondering what great things people have...

    Gushers in fridge

Thanks a bunch! And thanks again for the recipe. It's a great one to get us newbs excited about cider. Cheers

    Gushers in fridge

I did my first ever cider over a month ago. It's upstatemike's caramel apple hard cider. I didn't have time to stovetop pasteurize, so once carbonation was good, I stuck the bottles in the fridge. Now, a few weeks later, these bottles have turned into gushers. I have a few questions: 1 -...

    China Made Fermenters

+1 to this and the FOB. I make my living importing cheap automotive crap from Asia and the Chinese will try just about anything to save a penny. I would recommend seeing if they have any referrals from US customers. Possibly someone you could hitch a container ride with. Or, hookup with a...

    Relocating to Corvallis

Suds and Suds is where I learned my appreciation for good beer. Made it "around the world" 3 times. Sounds like the beer scene has expanded a bit since I lived there about 6 years ago. I hear flat tail has some good beers.

    Caramel Apple Hard Cider

Thanks! I got around to bottling today. Final gravity was .998, with my original gravity was 1.068. I'm assuming abv calculation is same as beer? that gives me 9.3% before adding concentrate. Does that seem correct or even possible, or is something wrong with my calculation? Taste is...

    Caramel Apple Hard Cider

I'm having the same issue as hwils. My gravity is already down to 1.006 after only one week. Should I be concerned or do anything special? Possibly increase/dilute some of the concentrate before bottling?

    The sound of cider activity

Thanks for the suggestions upstatemike. Btw I also have to thank you because this is your caramel apple recipe! I finally decided to take a reading. My og was 1.068 and it's only one week later and my gravity is 1.006. Should I be concerned that its so low? Should I consider bottling already...

It's official starting my own brewing business!

Great thread! The above quote sounds like enough of a reason to increase the days of operation, and get rid of the day job ;) Good luck. I look forward to seeing the continued progress!

    The sound of cider activity

Yeah. There's already a couple small ports for the air to escape, so I think they would still bypass the airlock. Possibly I can find a way to clog those as well.

    The sound of cider activity

Decided to try my first cider earlier this week. I didn't want to take up any carboy real estate so I'm fermenting in an old "mr beer" fermenter. Since it doesn't use an airlock, it's hard to tell if there is much happening. I did however notice the "snap, crackle, pop"- rice krispie sound...
