5 Month Old Yeast - Starter?

Still good. It might take a little longer to show signs of fermentation in your starter. It will grow just fine. I like the Homebrewdad Yeast calculator spreadsheet for this reason (better numbers than Mr Malty) and because I can access it without the internet.

    Trouble with Starters

Stir plates are preferred because it’s easy and efficient. Constant aeration will grow WAY more yeast cells. Look into making one from a computer fan and a cigar box. If you know someone getting rid of a desktop take it for the fan, hard drive magnets, and some wires. You can use a growler in...

    Aeration

Aeration before pitching. I’ve done it this way since brewing extract years ago. Instructions said to and I knew I wouldn’t break yeast cell walls this way.

New Hop Garden 2014 (pic heavy)

You’re expecting me to remember. I cut most of what I had growing back, again, for the second time. I then started digging in one hope bed and cut two perfectly good crowns to store and a third to plant in an empty hop bed. Seriously, four crowns grew in three years from one tiny rhizome that...

    Trouble with Starters

If you’re just shaking a starter you won’t get anywhere near what a stir plate produces for yeast growth. Also pitching two packs is overkill for a yeast starter. A stir plate helps a TON and a 5 liter flask works well for 10 gallon batches. A second option is to make a 1 gallon batch of beer...

Sour Mash/Sour Wort Berliner Weisse (Instant Pot Programmable Pressure Cooker)

This needs to happen. I might have to use my DUO for a 1 gallon lacto starter batch when I find time. I noticed, during a sous vide cook, the instant pot heats to a point, turns off, then turns back on a few degrees later. I think this would be better for a longer ‘cook’ and if the pH gets too...

Small batch all grain using an instant pot

I thought about this today. It would make a great mash controller to set the temperature to 150F for an hour using a grain bag. Anyone use it to pressure can starter wort?
