    Drying Hops Idea

I made my own box fan past, which is able to get the 3 to 5 pounds of hops I gather each year dry in a couple of days in a hot garage. I'll spend an evening vacuum sealing them and store them in the freezer for use. I use gallon bags, and they can store 4 to 5 oz of dry hops in them without an...

Early Signs - Fast Die off

I'm in the same boat. Two of my three batches I started on Sunday began fermenting within 8 hours, and are seemingly done this morning. One Notty, one S04. Both dry yeasts, both rehydrated following packet directions, in 5 gallons of 1.051 wort. Ferment temp right around 75 (swamp cooler set up...

Thank you for the kind words. This garden is a lot of work, and after mid June, I have to let the bed do their own thing. It gets too bushy and thick to get in to them. I think they look smaller because they're contained inside of those cages. Each have grown almost 30 linear feet. Since it...

I thin out rhizomes annually, but the crowns are enormous. I just need to get into the ground and eliminate all of the excess. Which thread do you post your garden? I'd be interested to see it. I'm just south of the mall, off of Essington, by the police station. Small world!

First all-grain | Super simple BIAB

It will be a malt bomb, but as long as that is what you're expecting and want, then you will be pleased. Munich is one of my favorite malts. I don't use it a lot on purpose. I like it as a special treat in the fall. I think this will be an interesting read once it is all brewed up.

It was a long time ago, probably 13 or 14. I think it was Gambrinus. I remember it being very malty. I'm pre[y sure is was 20L. My BIL thought it was amazing so I gifted him a 12 pack of it. I liked it a lot, but haven't had the patience for a true lager since.

Here is an update for the end of July. Hopefully harvest will be early September. All have Spurs, and everyone but Nugget has some developed cones. Nugget seems to be a late bloomer. Chinook has clearly taken over much of the cage for Cascade. I'll probably harvest all of it as a NZCC annual...

First all-grain | Super simple BIAB

I did a Bock with half dark Munich half pilsner, and it was good, but I was going for crazy malty. That's what I got. Crazy malty. My guess is that yours will come out the same. Your hops may balance out more of the malt, I only used 1 oz. For 5 gallons of a 1.080 beer and it was a 4.xx...

    Base hops

I have been using Nugget a lot for my easy drinking beers, and Zeus for my IPAs as my base. Everything starts there for me. It's what I like.

12 days later, and things got wildly out of control. I'm still able to maintain the main bones, but the sidearms that are being tossed out are massive. In hindsight, I should have been on this fertilizer schedule since April (oh well) but the three treatments since the end of May have made a big...

I was able to get into the garden yesterday to manage the plants. They have really taken off. On Memorial Day, soil tested for nutrients and pH to find out that my pH is too high, and my N levels were extremely low. The residual P and K levels were normal. I used an Azalea and Rhodedendron...

So, I finally got into the yard for year 5. After last year's fence stain debacle, I was eager to get into the beds and get these plants rolling. Only Chinook produced flowers last year, and I left all of it on the bine over winter. Cleaning the beds out today was fun, the leaves and flower...
