soaking oak chips in bourbon, discard bourbon or add all?

“Oak chips” you say? Will any old oak do, or are there other criteria the wood should meet? *eyes huge oak tree in back yard *

    band-aid beer into lambic?

Well crap. I read the whole thread and didn’t look at the date until the end (this happens a lot) and now I want to know how this turned out too.

Accentuating phenols and esters in witbier

I am (hopefully, if I can get done with the “honey-do list”) going to make a witbier this weekend, even though this is the third week I’ve said this…anyway… I have been reading on lallemands website about best practices for their Belgian Wit strain and it suggests pitching at a lower rate in...

    $12 dry yeast for beer?

I don’t think I paid $12 for yeast, hops and spices all together to go into my witbier and I thought I was “getting fancy”.

I wonder what would happen if....

Ooh that’s a good one too

    Foam on top of wort??

This is a good point. I normally have my house shoes on when brewing but didn’t when I took the picture…for whatever reason.

I wonder what would happen if....

This is a very similar visualization to the one I get. I’m of Appalachian descent so there’s a significant amount of Celtic lineage in there by default. I don’t even remember where I first heard/read it but it definitely stuck… and now my wife and kids say it…

    Suggestions for first all-grain batch?

For my first all grain brew, I picked a style I liked (Brown Ale, nothing difficult or spectacular), researched, researched, researched and then just did it and it came out great. You could do a simple grain bill with no adjuncts or a SMaSH beer or whatever just to get the feel for it but you...

    Dry hopping techniques.

I think the magnet might act as a weight as well(?)

    Dry hopping techniques.

This is probably my favorite idea so far. It’s simple, cheap and I don’t have to modify anything.

    Dry hopping techniques.

I didn’t even think about the ones with the pour spout! If the cap on the spout will seal airtight, they’d be perfect. If not, I still have a metric short ton of electrical tape. Barring that, I have hole saws and a deburring tool…and, of course, electrical tape.

    Dry hopping techniques.

Good idea. Maybe I could use a (#10?)bung stopper or something and that would facilitate dry hopping rather well.

    Dry hopping techniques.

I’ll look into that. I have a hard time with justifying spending that much on a fv when I can drill holes in a bucket for like 20% of the price. However, this is a strong argument for investing in a fermonster (which I’ve been eyeballing for a while anyway)

    Dry hopping techniques.

I have an IPA that I intend to dry hop and I have taped the top onto my bucket fermenter with a lot of electrical tape ( because I like to seal my fermenter for whatever reason) so I don’t really want to wrassle with the 30 feet of tape I put on there and my only other option seems to be popping...

    Foam on top of wort??

That tube is my recirculation pump, I kept it on there to use in conjunction with the wort chiller. … I also may have used it to recirculate the wort leading up to the boil….I think I see where you’re going with this (now I feel kinda dumb).
