    12 days and still bubbling

For various reasons I recently made an Imperial IPA from a kit. (fermentables9.9 lbs of LME and a pound of corn sugar and Wyeast 1056 instead of the yeast in the kit). I have a Brew Belt hooked up to a thermostat so I have been able to maintain a constant temperature of 70 degrees for the last...

    Improving my bottling game

Definitely get a bottling bucket. You may have to install your own dip dube, but there are numerous suggestions on this board. I made mine out of pvc that screwed right on to the inside of the tap. And one of the best cheap equipment investments that I made was an auto siphon. No more sucking...

    Using a net bag

One time, following a suggestion someplace on this forum, I used a bag with marbles in it in my carboy. It did keep the hop particles contained, but I had a hard time extracting it through the narrow carboy neck. Now I too just use a fine filter over the end of my racking cane.

    Hops in steeping grains

I have a book called Craft Beer for the Home Brewer by Michael Agnew. Several of the extract recipes with steeped grains call for adding some hops while the grains are steeping. I have never heard of this. Has anybody done so? What is the benefit? If one of the recipes was converted to BIAB...

When should I begin to Worry?

Many thanks. Just checked it at 36 hours after pitching...bubbling happily.

When should I begin to Worry?

It has been 24 hours and so far no sign of fermentation. I did something a little differnt this time. Three days ago I got my starter going, planning on brewing two days ago, but something came up. The starter was doing fine after a day so I put it into the refrigerator (which, according to...

    Heady Topper Irony

Well, in my case, twenty minutes from opened to finished....is it really that much less fresh over that period of time? I drank two of my four-pack from the can, and two from a glass and couldn't tell the difference. I prefer the glass. That said, one of the best beers I have ever had.

    Heady Topper Irony

Hah! I'm just far enough from their closest distribution point that, without dedicating an overnight to make the pilgramage, I'd like for somebody to send me samples, too. Maybe my daughter will be heading that way again soon and can take orders.

    Heady Topper Irony

My daughter gave me a 4-pack of Heady Topper for Christmas (she gets Daughter of the Year award). On the can it says to drink from the can, but the label shows a person drinking from a glass.

    Custom Glassware

One of my daughters gave me custom glasses for Christmas a couple of years ago. It is fun to have them and a nice reminder of that daughter. I don't think that they were too expensive. Someplace I even read about do-it-yourself glass etching, so you could make your own custom glasses. In fact...

    New and concerned

Was this a kit? If so it should have come with fairly detailed directions which, if followed correctly, should give you decent results, as well as introducing you to the process. If you didn't start with a kit, I'd have to ask, what kind of recipe and instructions were you following? I consider...

BIAB with an electric portable water heater

I have a small countertop burner similar to this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005T0SN0K/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 I built a simple wooden support for my pot because I was concerned that the weight of five gallons of water plus twelve pounds of grain might damage it. If the mash temperature...

Different hydrometer reading on two days

I took a starting gravity reading on the beer I brewed yesterday that came out at 1.064 at 70F. When I cleaned up I forgot to empty the hydrometer and this morning when I looked at it the reading was 1.066. There was a lot of hop sediment that had settled out overnight and I wonder if that...

    Is this normal?

For my most recent brew I used Wyeast 3711. My SG was 1.06 and it fermented furiously for two days, then stopped. I thought that maybe I had a stuck fermentation, but when I measured the gravity, it was 1.012, which was pretty much my target. I don't think that I have ever had such a fast...
