    Bad efficiency brew day

during mash. if grain bed gets locked there is not a whole lot of water surrounding the grist to encapsulate it. when the recirc bypasses it all the ratio is not great. like making pasta and not getting the noodles to free flow, in this case it would be the pasta getting stuck together and...

    Bad efficiency brew day

oh no with the grain bill I use at 40% wheat, with my setup it will gelatinize to a stiff "oatmeal". I think I use at least 2lbs (with out my notes total grain bill is 21-22#) . cant go wrong with more than enough and is a pain when you don't use enough. in my case I may have not let the...

    Bad efficiency brew day

I have had channeling issues before when brewing a beer with 40% wheat and using rice hulls when recirculating the mash and lost gravity points.

New post a picture of your pint

A Vienna Dakota grown malt American ESB (there is some Special B and C10 in there as well). Has not cleared as fast as I would like, but the residual English yeast still hanging around has a nice flavor. once cleared this baby will be crisp with a nice mouth feel and the earthy hops and malt...

    Compost bucket sour?

this kind of reminds of a post long ago about someone propagating yeast from their pet cat hair (the animal). what ever happened to that one.

    Who's smoking meat this weekend?

Trial run for the smoke generator on some ground jerky tomorrow. I was not happy with the amount of smoke using a pot on the electric burner in the box as there was minimal combustion. the installation states you can attach to wooden enclosures but for the actual run i am going to add some...

Hello, lurker with a first post - Just bottled my first brew

trying to save every last bit of beer out of a bucket siphoning can be a hassle, depending on the type of yeast used and how hard the yeast/trub is. I chalk it up to part of the process and consider it byproduct. siphoning is fine but with using buckets might be best to drill a hole and put a...

    DIY Kettle Hop Screen

I understand that whirlpooling has a great effect on dropping out proteins and hop matter, i myself have not tried it yet and have been using a nylon bag for a while. the terrors of plugging the plate chiller run deep and is not a fun ordeal. plus, an extra 15-30 minutes to brew day for a...

Why Sear-First is Better Than Reverse-Sear for Steak

i would say charcoal/gas grill sear first and then indirect heat. pellet grill reverse sear. i reverse sear on the pellet grill as i don't own a charcoal grill and my table top gas grill just doesn't get hot enough. remove the steaks and foil then open the plate and turn pellet grill to 400...
