I dropped the hose connected to my aquarium pump into my glass carboy while aerating my wort. It went through the whole 4 week primary. Beer turned out great but getting the hose out wasn't.
I'll have to put my vote in for Sierra Nevada. While I wouldn't claim any of their beers are my absolute favorite, all of their brews are mighty tasty and the have a huge selection and seasonals to keep it fresh.
Congrats! It's a great feeling isn't it? Almost makes you wanna give the driver a big hug! I am expecting a delivery of ingredients for an Amber ale today.... Speaking of which, I should probably go check again. Christmas comes at all times of the year!
If you intend to do a mash out, then you are correct. That is done prior to collecting first runnings. Heating your sparge water to 168 ( and therefore not heating the grain bed to 168) helps to better dissolve the sugars and increase efficiency.

This is what I do as well. Except I use a bottling bucket with a spigot and transfer it through a sanitized plastic hose. To get the last little bit below the spigot I pour it into a funnel and into the carboy
