    First cider sanity check

@RPh_Guy thanks for the feedback! A bench trial for back sweetening definitely makes more sense and I'll give that a go.

    First cider sanity check

I plan to brew my first cider and wanted to get input from others on my plan. I want to brew a semi-sweet to sweet cider similar to Downeast. Plan to get raw pasteurized apple cider (or unpasteurized and pasteurize myself) from most likely Trader Joes or Wholefoods. I live in Boston so I'm sure...

Steeping coffee in beer vs water

The beer that this article pertains to is pretty much a founders breakfast Stout clone. I was considering maybe a cheaper stout like maybe a Guinness, though as others have pointed out the volume of cold brew to overall brew volume it probably makes no difference in what is used.

Steeping coffee in beer vs water

The article that @Northern_Brewer suggests covers this method and appears to be a good method to achieve coffee aromatics

Steeping coffee in beer vs water

I didn't even think about adding cold brew prior to fermentation. This sounds like a great method and will try that next time.

Steeping coffee in beer vs water

Yeah that's exactly what I'd like to do. Maybe it wasn't worthy of its own thread, but wanted to hear if others have done that method. Seems like a better alternative to water.

Steeping coffee in beer vs water

In the past Ive added coarse ground beans to the fermenter in a mesh bag with great results. However this requires opening up the fermenter multiple times and dirtying a bag. I do pressurized fermentation in corny kegs which is one reason it's not desired. It sounds like making a concentrated...

DIY/poor man's floating diptube for clear beer

Yeah your right. I must have had some supplies already sitting around the house when I built mine. I just priced it out at $9. Sorry for the misinformation. US $1.23 | stainless steel 304 welding wire mig tig welding rods 1.0mm 1.2mm 1.6mm 2.0mm 2.5mm 3.2mm 4.0mm...

DIY/poor man's floating diptube for clear beer

I have the first version MK1 not MK3. I think it cost me about $7 each. You can get the parts on AliExpress and for MK3 I'd guess it will cost about $5 each per floating dip tube. Gusiness has links for the parts on his/her website. Only drawback is can take a few weeks to get parts from AliExpress.

Brewing with 6+ month old raw honey

Thanks for the suggestions all. I ended up getting too busy to pasteurize the honey and after a week of fermentation decided to leave it out. My guess is I actually had less than 8 oz of honey and sounds like it would have almost no impact on the beer.

Brewing with 6+ month old raw honey

Brewing with honey for the first time in a 5 gal batch of a DIPA. I've got about 8 oz of raw honey that was given to me about 6 months ago by a friend that is a beekeeper. I realize this amount of honey probably won't have much of an impact, but I'm only looking for a subtle honey note in the...

Pressurized Closed Loop Corny Keg Fermenting

Do any of you ever transfer to a keg that has recently been finished and not cleaned? I have a pale ale that probably has only a few pints left and thinking about leaving it in the kegerator once done and kept cold under pressure. I have a raspberry wheat ale fermenting now and considering...

What size knockout for 1/2 weldless bulkhead

I've used a step bit and greenlee hole punch and have had the best luck with step bits. With the hole punch I tested it on an aluminum cookie sheet and it made a perfect hole. However, on my bayou classic SS kettle the hole punch made a terrible cut and ripped some of the metal outside of the...

    That makes sense. Thanks!

240v eBIAB Build with Portable GFCI

So moving to Boston soon from rural NC and unfortunately our housing will be downsizing substantially. We have not figured out where we will live yet, but I may not have an easily accessible 240v source. So i'm considering using my controller with 120V. Below is the wiring diagram I used. My...
