    Samischlaus BJCP

Certified judge here - could look at entering it as an Eisbock is it fits the parameters

Calling all BJCP judges. How to prepare for tests?

For the online examination, do what Yooper said - print off all the BJCP Materials you can. Make sure you know all the terms (I.e. Diacetal, mash, phenolic, etc). You also should sign up for a tasting exam as soon as you can. They fill up very quickly, and are sometimes difficult to find one...

    Whats in Houston?

Flying Saucer is downtown, Gingerman is in Rice area, Petrol Station in northwest Houston. Karbach Brewery has a nice deal Fridays at 5-8 ($12 gets you 4-5 pints and a tour). St. Arnold's has tastings and tours Saturday morning

    Pearland/South Houston Gatherings?

I'm a Foam Ranger - you should come to the meetings at Defalcos (good beer and advice from great brewers). There's also the Mashtronauts over toward NASA. 3rd Friday of each month at 7, plus other activities during the month.

    Karbach: Weisse Versa Wheat Clone?

If you live in Houston, go by for the tour and tasting Friday at 5. The brewers are always there and they'll give you more info. Plus for 8 bucks, you get a glass and 4 "samples."

    I want to cry :smh:

Also used a magnet to ensure no lead, only steel pellets from thermometer.

    I want to cry :smh:

Had the same thing happen - broken thermometer at the end of the boil. I left a gallon at the bottom of the kettle, strained it through a strainer from the pot, then strained again from primary to secondary. Turned out good though. Only use a dial thermometer now when chilling.

    Dixie Cup 2013

I went to the Dixie Cup last year, and if I remember right it's the 3rd weekend in October. Gonna go again - Thursday is welcome social gathering, Friday is real nice pot luck dinner, Saturday is awards and beer pairing dinner. There's also speakers Saturday morning and a pub crawl that...

    Preventing boil-overs

Cold water in a spray bottle is what I use

    Lowering ABV

You could make a light pale ale with 4-5 lbs of 2 row + a few specialty grains + a few ounces of hops. Or look up recipes for British Mild. I have a Dry Stout that has an OG of 1.035, FG of 1.012 - only about 3.5 alcohol. Also made a 60 Shilling - had around 3-3.5 alcohol. Style depends on what...

Any thoughts on what this is??

Well Brewski, it looks like it might be some sort of contamination. I'd use a thief and draw a sample - for gravity and taste. How does it smell? You know the alcohol in it should have prevented contamination (unless you sneezed in it). You got me, but if it tastes and smells OK, don't get...

Any thoughts on what this is??

Did you sanitize the hop bag (ie star San, vodke, etc)? Could also be the hops kicking in some yeast. Did the gravity change?

    Perlick Restoration

Thanks for the invite - it might be difficult to get there as I'm in Houston (also an Eagles fan). Congrats again on the project.
