HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

The shield I was looking at costs 32.50 euro, or about $44.50. I just noticed that's not-soldered - but you already going to solder anway. Maybe it's just me, but $45 doesn't seem that much to have a professional reliable solution, than risk botching the job up with a bad solder to the...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Can someone confirm the net savings here compared to a regular brewpi setup? From what I can make out, this setup doesn't use the shield and uses a 2 channel relay instead of 2 SSRs. There's no with the relays, both the 2 channel board and 2 SSRs cost $10. That leaves the shield, which costs...

    $100 to spend on ??

I would go with a temperature controller. Once you've got the brewday sorted, which it sounds like you have, then the next biggest thing is fermentation control - it's easily the single investment that makes the biggest difference to the final beer. By removing temperature swings, you can keep...

    Brewtroller bubbler

Thanks for the tip on the sensors and calculating SG based on boiloff. As it is, I've already got the MPX5010DP sensors so I'll be trying to use those. I'd also prefer to measure the SG rather than estimate it. Anything that can be done digitally will save my having to strain to accurately read...

    Brewtroller bubbler

for calibrating, I was thinking of weighing the water. I have some digital scales which I think are accurate, and certainly more accurate than I can read a scale on the side of a conical flask. Although if there is some error, the absolute volume does not need to be so accurate. I'm more after...

    Brewtroller bubbler

Just to give another perspective, I need it since I have poor eyesight. I have blichmann kettles, and the laser etched markings are difficult to read. I always find it a strain to read the volume. Also, I will be gradually building in more automation, and digital volume sense is a key part of that.

    Brewtroller bubbler

Great, this is what I was thinking. To avoid the human error in placing the two bubblers at a distance, I would not try to measure the distance at all or the diameter of the kettle, but instead calibrate by filling with a known volume of water. I can then calibrate the difference in pressure...

    Brewtroller bubbler

Sorry to revive an old thread, but the BT site is unpredictable at the minute (can't find any of the old forum posts on the bubbler.) I would like one of these in my boil kettle. I understand how the bubbler works, but I can't see how a single pressure reading can tell you the volume accurately...

Anyone have trouble with Chi Company customer service?

(Sorry to revive an old thread, but thought best keep all the info in one place.) My current experiences with CHI aren't good. I placed an order with them 2 months ago. All the parts were shown as in stock on the website, but the carbonation lid couldn't be shipped because the carbonation...

    Old ass grains

I've just got back to brewing after 2 and a half year break. I didn't even think about grain freshness, kinda just assumed they would be ok, and brewed 5 10gal batches with the grain I had. Just tasted the first 2 batches and it's not good. The beer has body, but has poor head retention...

How long will crushed grain keep?

I know this is an old thread, but for prosperity, I'll mention that I brewed 4 10gal batches of beer in my new bewery, forgetting that the grain was out of date by 2 years. The beer had little head, and just tasted totally one dimensional. Like a glass of water sugar with a stale twist. Brews...

resistance / resistivity of water and wort

Thanks for the responses (and the cool pic!). I understand there are many variables that affect conductivity, and thankfully I don't need to get an accurate measurement myself - the floatless level switch is doing all that. I was just hoping to try to get a measurement that's in the region of...

resistance / resistivity of water and wort

Does anyone know the typical resistivity of wort and tap water? I'm hoping to use several floatless level switches which operates using resistance. It switches on at 0-4kOhm (presence of liquid), and off at 15kOhm and above (no liquid). Its intended for use with general tap water, so it should...

Yeast Starters - Stir or not to stir!!

Stirring is good (by swirlling), but a stir plate is better. Derrin's brewing hardware stocks kits and ready made stirplates for a lot less than elsewhere. I can't find the reference now, but there was a reputable-looking study showing swirling regularly (every hour) gave 4x more yeast, while...

    how much yeast is this?

Good to see that - since I was going to write how much? "plenty"!
