Is there a "minimum batch size"? Single-bottle "micro-batch" Mead?

I personally would use a 1L mason jar with a large enough hole drilled in the lid to fit a bung or airlock to make enough mead to bottle 750ml. When racking/bottling there is always going to be a 'loss' due to settled yeast that you DO NOT want to end up in the finished mead. If done right...

Modern mead-making: do you still rack? how often?

I only do BOMMs now. They're so easy and turn out great. I always rack into a secondary vessel after the first month. It's never clear in that time so I add sparkolloid and in a week or two it's completely clear. I then either add spices suspended in a bag made with tied up cheesecloth until I...

Please help! Item stuck in carboy

I just racked the mead into bottles and pulled the bung out with a bent coat hanger. No rubber taste :)

    Aerating/degassing Wine

Well I recently read an article on open fermentation of wine, where much more CO2 can escape much faster than the traditional method of using an airlock during primary. I notice a lot of people in the mead forum do exactly this, placing a towel over the bucket rather than clamping down the lid...

    When to Distil?

Well the recipe I 'screwed up' is a simple Welch's Concord Grape Grappa. He uses two 1 litre bottles and 5kg sugar for 6 gallons of mash. I used 5 bottles of juice, 5kg sugar and about 1 kilo of table grapes crushed with the juice mixed into the must and the crushed grapes suspended in the wine...

Please help! Item stuck in carboy

Lol. I just got a rubber bung stuck in a 1 gallon glass carboy. I'll be bottling it on Wednesday though, so I hope a week of the bung being in my mead doesn't cause the mead to taste like rubber. It was one of two test batches, and it's the one I like least, so I'm not overly worried about it.

Newbie: Where do you purchase honey?

I can't seem to find bulk local honey. All the farmers markets in my area won't give deals for bulk amounts because they're normally able to sell that honey fast enough at their own price that giving me a deal would just be loosing them money. Prices have sadly gone up since I first started...

    Empty demijon needing filled

Yeah, like the post above me, it seems what mead I can even find at stores is sub par to what I can make on my own. If you want a real good tasting truly craft mead, your best option is to make it yourself. It's well worth the wait. If you don't want to wait months or years to drink it, Bray's...

    Can I make mead cheap?

Sine baker's honey is a byproduct of wax extraction, does this make it less expensive than 'regular' raw honey?

    Aerating/degassing Wine

Strange. I will need to run a side by side experiment with mead to test this. My most recent batch of Bray's One Month Mead turned out far better than my first ever batch or the one I screwed up by adding DAP too late and it seems like degassing is a very important step in the process. I guess I...

    Aerating/degassing Wine

I'll probably degas it once more tomorrow and check gravity. If it still has a ways to go I may degas one more time, but I have a feeling that when I check it tomorrow it will be nearly done fermenting as it has picked up speed rapidly as of the last few days.

    When to Distil?

Thanks for the reply. I haven't found the artisan-distiller forum yet. I'll start reading there and do some searches to see if I can find my questions answered there.

    When to Distil?

My friend tells me to distil my mash as soon as it's done fermenting (to him, this means as soon as the airlock stops bubbling, he doesn't use a hydrometer). Is this correct? Or should I let my wine clear before running it? I know I should wait a couple of weeks for the yeast to clean up after...

    Why do you make wine?

I make wine (mead and other alcohols) because I can. I like how I can customise everything to my own liking. I enjoy tinkering. My other hobby is RC (Radio Control) aircraft. Making alcohol is a nice addition to that in my life. I can make something with my own hands and time, and end up with a...
