    What brewery are you visiting?

Not a brewery, but a meadery. Tornadoes and severe storms along our planned route home necessitated a sharp turn heading due south. Ended up in Tupelo, MS, with a request from our daughter to get some Tupelo honey. What we got was a Master Class in ‘honey’, mainly that there is almost no...

    What are you drinking now?

College days! Friday afternoons, the poor college kids (me) would head down to Louise’s on Tennessee Avenue for ‘no lie’ 45 oz schooners of Falstaff and join the factory workers who’d dump 6 oz mini-cans of tomato juice into those $.25 beers. Called ‘em Red Beers. I don’t know if it says more...

    What are you drinking now?

“Hamm’s…mmmm, Hamm’s!” “From the Land of Sky Blue Waters…” Brings back memories, listening to the Saturday baseball games on the radio with my Dad on the backyard patio. He’d have been 103 tomorrow. 🙂

Many salutes on the donation of a kidney, and Godspeed for your sister’s speedy recovery. You mentioned Blonde Ale. There seems to be a resurgence of this simple, understated style. While visiting SoCal the past few weeks, I’ve developed quite a liking for a collaboration Blonde Ale from...

    What are you drinking now?

SoCal and the mid-Coast are now a fond but fading memory as we head East, tonight in Page, AZ/UT, at the Wahweap area of Lake Powell. We’ll visit Antelope Canyon tomorrow and visit the Navajo Tribal lands. But tonight, a smorgasbord of Paso beers from Firestone Walker. Decisions, decisions….

Came across that same Weihenstephaner Helles last fall in a store in St. Petersburg, FL. Very enjoyable. Trouble was, it ‘evaporated’ much to easily.

Yeah, you’re probably good at :30 minutes rest at beta and alpha. As I mentioned, you’re already getting some beta conversion at 131F (really don’t need to start mash in any lower than that with today’s modern malts). I do 30/30 beta/alpha. My mash in is at 131F, and I dough-in the grains...

U.S. too. In the last six months alone we’ve stayed at least eight times at vineyards and breweries from the Finger Lakes in New York to Texas and now California, all basically for free. Except, of course, all we spend on libations with the host properties. We love us some Harvest Host!

The beta and alpha enzymes are ‘active’ at those temperatures, though not necessarily at their peak levels of conversion. Above 160F alpha will begin to denature, and both beta and alpha will be pretty much gone at 168F. Your step profile looks pretty good, but I like to perform beta rest @...

    What are you drinking now?

I remember about 30 years ago somebody thought it would be a ‘great’ idea to stock Hunting Creek with Rainbow trout. When Ike was President, he had loved snagging Browns in the wild, cascading stream when he visited Camp David (named, BTW, for his Grandson David Eisenhower). A smart naturalist...

    What are you drinking now?

Spent the day driving from Bakersfield, CA, to Paso Robles. Stopped at the truck stop along CA-46 where James Dean made his last fuel stop before heading West (literally and figuratively) before his fatal car crash in the 50s. Spending the night dry camping at Four Sisters winery, courtesy of...
