Hops Infusion/Randall Best Practices & Recipes

Some friends of mine own a brewpub and have put me to task in finding a hops randall/infusion device. With that part of the task now out of the way, I'm now looking for success stories related to one of these contraptions actually in use. So here are some of my questions, hopefully someone out...

    About to start kegging

I recently obtained a single-tower, Haier keggerator from a friend who no longer used it, and I'm ready to convert my home brewing operation into kegs rather than bottling. While the keggerator came along with all the necessary components, I'm going to have to invest in some kegs. Are there...

Wanted: Samuel Smith Nut Brown Clone

I did a Sam Smith Nut Brown clone from the pages of Beer Captured. Unfortunately, I discovered it is a tough on to duplicate. The Malt bill lacked serious body, which sadly left a weird, inauthentic nutty tinge to both the top and bottom notes. Currently, I've got a nut brown in my secondary for...

Ready to make the jump to all grain!

Something that I hadn't yet tried, but will now. Thanks, Berniep.

Ready to make the jump to all grain!

However, I need bigger equipment. Several home brewers I know have acquired used, 1/2 barrel kegs that they have converted for their specific brewing purposes. Unfortunately, my efforts in obtaining said used barrels has thus proved to be fruitless. Does anyone have any success...

    Iodine contributing to off-taste?

A valid point. I've already decided to experiment with using some bottled spring water for my next batch. Any brand suggestions? Thus far, the research I've done puts Deer Park a the top of my list.

    Iodine contributing to off-taste?

I followed the directions on the 4oz. bottle: "For Home brewers: 1tsp. with 1.5 gallons of water."

    Iodine contributing to off-taste?

Has anyone out there ever had a problem with Iodophor lending an iodine taste to a batch? My first extract kit bottled was a dunkel. It was brewed with no specialty grains; an all-extract beer in every sense of the word. The guys at the local brew shop suggested the off-taste could be due to a...

    WLP 029 or Wyeast 2565?

I currently have an Alt in my fermenter with WLP029 and I've had some difficulty...at least I think. The airlock isn't showing any bubbles, but I'm fairly sure the yeast is chomping away; I can see a foam cap, and after a whirl and a shake I had a good bit of pressure under my thumb...

Is excessive sediment a problem for fermentation?

Should have mentioned that...I used a White Labs WLP029 (German Ale/Kolsch). I didn't use a starter - didn't think it was necessary for this one. Should also mention the Alt was an extract kit from Northern Brewer

Is excessive sediment a problem for fermentation?

I'm wondering if anyone has some insight as to whether or not excessive sediment would impede fermentation? On both occasions, my brother-in-law inadvertently sucked EVERYTHING out of the kettle with the siphon; in both batches (a Baltic porter, and most recently and alt beer) do not show any...
